The authors consider random excitations of suspended cables which can exhibit complex dynamics such as multiple internal resonance due to their overall flexibility under wide-band random loading. Cable nonlinearities due to stretching can produce variation in natural frequencies, and cable can oscillate freely like a pendulum when internal resonance exists between the in-plane and out-of-plane modes of oscillations. During non-planar motion, a part of the energy is transferred between the mutually perpendicular transverse components with frequency detouring. The authors estimate the statistical response by using the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations with Gaussian and first-order non-Gaussian closures. The Gaussian closure fails to predict solutions for mixed-mode interaction. The stochastic bifurcation of the indirectly excited out-of-plane modes is examined by studying the time history records, which, in turn, are predicted by using non-Gaussian closure and Monte Carlo simulations.
