    The authors discuss the dynamics of submerged cables employed in ocean engineering. Two sources of nonlinearities affect the cable response: the fluid damping and the geometric stiffening caused by the cable due to the finite deformations of its centerline. The contribution of each nonlinear effect, both separately and in combination, is evaluated by studying the structural waves that form in the direction normal to the cable equilibrium plane. The authors suggest four models of cable response and discuss their numerical implementations. The results are critically compared, and the ranges of the validity of the models are established.
