The authors consider modifications of vector extrapolation methods like reduced rank extrapolation (modified) minimal polynomial extrapolation or the topological epsilon algorithm. The kernel of the new methods is investigated. The notion of a `generalized residual' is introduced and used in the analysis of the methods. It is shown that the methods comprise several known hybrid and smoothing procedures for the case of vectors generated by Richardson's iteration for linear systems. The case of nonlinear systems is also treated.
