The authors study a one-dimensional event map generated by a two degree-of-freedom mechanical system that undergoes self-exciting oscillations due to dry friction. Model of such a stick-slip system consists of two blocks supported by a moving belt. Each block is connected with a fixed support by a linear spring, and both blocks are connected together by a linear spring. The contact surfaces between the blocks and the belt are supposed to be rough with different friction coefficients. The iterated map allows a simpler representation and better understanding of the dynamical behavior of this system related to repeated events in which the two blocks after slipping move again and after some time of accelerated motion return to another stick phase. By using cubic splines, the authors show how to reconstruct event maps from experimental data. The computation of one-parameter bifurcation diagrams for varying driving velocities concludes the paper.
