The paper is concerned with the construction of multivariate wavelets. The authors develop conditions on a given finite collection of compactly supported algebraically linearly independent refinable functions that insure the existence of biorthogonal systems of refinable functions with similar properties. They show that the possibility of realizing such conditions is closely related to the concept of stationary subdivision schemes.
