The authors characterize tubes around totally geodesic quaternionic subspaces in a quaternionic projective space in terms of some conditions on the shape operator. Let \(M\) be a real hypersurface in a quaternionic projective space \(QP^m\), \(m\geq 3\). Denote by \(D\) the maximal quaternionic subbundle of the tangent bundle \(TM\) of \(M\), by \(A\) the shape operator of \(M\), and by \(g\) the induced Riemannian metric on \(M\). Let \(U_i\) resp. \(\phi_i\) \((i=1,2,3)\) be the structure vector fields and tensors on \(M\) induced from some canonical local basis of the quaternionic Kähler structure of \(QP^m\). The authors prove that \(M\) is an open part of a tube around some totally geodesic \(QP^k\) in \(QP^m\) for some \(0\leq k\leq m-1\) if \((\nabla_XA)Y=- \sum^3_i g(\phi X,Y)U_i\) and \(g((A\phi_i- \phi_iA)X,Y)=0\) for all vector fields \(X\), \(Y\) tangent to \(D\).
