      Let \(A_i = a_i (A)\) be operator functions of a selfadjoint operator \(A\) in a separable Hilbert space \(H\) and let \(E_{\lambda}\) be the resolution of unity corresponding to \(A\). The author considers a multipoint problem for the differential equation in \(H\): \[ \frac{d^n U}{d t^n} + A_1 \frac{d^{n-1} U}{d t^{n-1}} + \ldots + A_n U = G(t), \quad t \in [0,T], \eqno(1) \] with the prescribed values: \[ U(t_1) = \Phi_1, \dots ,U(t_n) = \Phi_n \quad (0 = t_1 < t_2 < \ldots < t_n =T) \eqno(2) \] and the values of the discontinuity jumps \[ \frac{d^p U}{d t^p} (s_j +0 ) - \frac{d^p U}{d t^p} (s_j -0 ) = \Phi^{j}_{n+p+1} \quad (p = 0, \ldots , n-1). \] The main result is as follows: the correctness of the problem (1), (2) does not depend on the existence of the discontinuity points \( s_j \in [0,T]\) whenever the solutions \(x_i(\lambda)\) to the characteristic equation for (1) satisfy the following condition: for some \(1 \leq k \leq n \) and \( C > 0 \) which do not depend on \(\lambda\), \[ \max\{|x_1 (\lambda)|, \dots ,|x_k (\lambda)|\} \leq C \] and, for all \(j,i > k\), the difference \(x_j (\lambda) - x_i (\lambda)\) is infinitely large and has order not less than the orders of \(x_i (\lambda)\) and \(x_j (\lambda)\). (If \(n>2\), one of such differences, say \(x_n (\lambda) - x_{n-1}(\lambda)\), can be excluded from the last condition.) Similar problems were considered in the author's previous publications [Journ. Inv. Ill-Posed Problems 2, No. 4, 327-347 (1994; Zbl 0822.35140), Sib. Mat. Zh. 29, No.4, 547 - 555 (1988; Zbl 0655.34016), Sib. Mat. Zh. 37, No.2, 251 - 258 (1996)].
