The article gives an analysis of some of the lesser known work of H. A. Lorentz (1853-1928) on fluid mechanics; it contains also some remarks on Lorentz's life and on a little known aspect of his activity (starting 1918) as president of a governmental committee (in Holland) for investigating the construction of a giant dam for closing off the Zuiderzee. The article appears in a special issue of the journal containing other papers devoted to the analysis of Lorentz's work on fluid mechanics (which was not one of his fields of specialization).
