    The author considers the class \(N^a\) of \(a\)-normal meromorphic functions (previously \(\alpha\)-normal in the literature) consisting of those meromorphic functions \(f(z)\) in the unit disk \(D\) for which \(\sup_{z \in D} (1- |z|)^{a} f^{\#}(z)< \infty\). The subclass \(N^{a}_{0}\) further requires that \(\lim_{|z|\to 1} (1- |z|)^{a} f^{\#}(z)= 0\). These classes are compared to the classes \(D_\#\) and \(UBC_{0}\) which consist of meromorphic functions \(f(z)\) satisfying, resp., \(\int_{D} [f^{\#}(z)]^{2} dm< \infty\) and \(\lim_{|w |\to 1} \int_{D} [f^{\#}(z)]^{2} g(z,w) dm= 0\), where \(g(z,w)\) is Green's function for \(D\). It is shown that \(\bigcup_{0<a<1/2} N^{a} \subset D_{\#}\) and \(\bigcup_{1/2 \leq a<1} N^{a} \not\subseteq D_{\#} \not\subseteq \bigcup_{1/2 \leq a<1} N^{a} \subset UBC_{0}\). Additionally, integral characterizations are given for \(N^a\) and \(N_{0}^{a}\).
