The authors introduce the notion of Lefschetz module and discuss its basic properties. If a Lefschetz module has a compatible Hodge structure, as is the case for the cohomology of a projective manifold, then its Mumford-Tate group is also defined. Two sections are devoted to examples of Kähler manifolds that give rise to Lefschetz modules of Jordan type (the total Lie algebra and the Kähler Lie algebra of a complex torus, the Neron-Severi Lie algebra of an abelian variety). The also investigate another interesting class of Lefschetz modules, which are called Frobenius-Lefschetz modules. Each choice of a Kähler class on a compact complex manifold defines an action of the Lie algebra \(sl(2)\) on its total complex cohomology. If a nonempty set of such Kähler classes is given, the authors prove that the corresponding \(sl(2)\)-copies generate a semisimple Lie algebra, and investigate the formal properties of the resulting representation. They work explicitly in the case of complex tori, hyperkähler manifolds and flag varieties. Special attention is given to the cases where this leads to a Jordan algebra structure or a graded Frobenius algebra.
