Let \(M\) be a complex manifold, \(E\) and \(F\) holomorphic vector bundles on \(M\) and \(f:E\to F\) a \(C^\infty\) isomorphism. Here for every odd integer \(k\geq 1\) the author defines a very interesting invariant \(E^k(F,E,f)\in H^k(M, {\mathbf O}_M)\) in the following way. Let \(A^{p,q} (M)\) be the space of smooth forms of type \((p,q)\) on \(M\). Set \(A:=f^{-1} (\partial f)\in A^{0,1} (M,\text{End} (E))\); \(E^k(E,F,f)\) is represented by \(C((k+1)/2) tr(A^k)\), where \(C(j): = \Gamma (j)\Gamma(j)/ \Gamma(2j)\) and \(\Gamma(x)\) is the classical \(\Gamma\) function. These Chern-Simons-like invariants are proved to have the following properties (P1), (P2), (P3) and (P4): (P1) \(E^k(E,F,f)\) is constant under deformations of the \(C^\infty\) bundle isomorphism \(f\) and vanishes if \(f\) is holomorphic; (P2) if \(k\geq 3\) \(E^k(E,F,f)\) is constant under deformations of the holomorphic structures on the bundles \(E\) and \(F\); (P3) (Integrability of Gauge Anomalies): if \(E\) and \(F\) are isomorphic as holomorphic vector bundles (but \(f\) may not be holomorphic) then \(E^k(E,F,f)\) is integral, i.e. it lies in the image of the natural map \(H^k(M, {\mathbf Z}) \to H^k(M, {\mathbf O}_M)\); (P4) (Cocycle Property) for every \(C^\infty\) isomorphism \(g:F\to H\) we have \(E^k(E,F,f^{-1}) =-E^k(E,F,f)\) and \(E^k(E,F, gf) =E^k(E,F,f) +E^k(E,F,g)\). By Property (P2) if \(k\geq 3\) and \(E^k(E,F,f)\neq 0\), then we cannot deform the holomorphic structures on \(E\) and \(F\) to make \(f\) holomorphic. By Property (P3) if \(k\geq 3\) and \(E^k(E,F,f)\) is not integral, then there is no homomorphic family of vector bundle parametrized by a connected manifold and containing both \(E\) and \(F\). By Properties (P3) and (P4) for any two \(C^\infty\) isomorphisms \(f,g\) from \(E\) to \(F\), \(E^k(E,F,f)\) and \(E^k (E,F,g)\) differ by an integral class. Hence the author obtains an interesting invariant \(E^k(E,F)\in H^k(M, {\mathbf O}_M)/H^k (M, {\mathbf Z})\) which vanishes if \(E\) and \(R\) are biholomorphic and which, for \(k\geq 3\), is invariant under deformations of the holomorphic structures on the bundles.
