The author shows an application of the subadditive ergodic theorem to the metric theory of continued fractions: to quote but one result of this interesting and dense paper, the author obtains a new proof of a conjecture of Lenstra [first proved in \textit{W. Bosma}, \textit{H. Jaeger} and \textit{F. Wiedijk}, Indag. Math. 45, 281-299 (1983; Zbl 0519.10043)]: Let \(p_n(x)/q_n(x)\) be the \(n\)th convergent in the continued fraction expansion of the real number \(x\). Then \[ \lim_{n\to+\infty} {\textstyle {\frac1n}}\# \{1\leq i\leq n;\;q_n(x)|q_n(x)x- p_n(x)|\leq z\}= G(z), \] where \[ G(z)=\begin{cases} 3/\log 2 &\text{if }0\leq z\leq 1/2,\\ (-z+\log (2z)+1)/\log 2 &\text{if }\frac12<z\leq 1.\end{cases} \] {}.
