The paper treats free and forced vibrations of a lathe support in the horizontal plane for an metal-plastic guide and studies the nonlinear dynamics and stability of the system's response. The authors investigate the mode coupling instability related to the contact dynamics of a machine tool. They construct a damping matrix based on a linear viscous dissipation model and formulate the system generalized forces via the principle of virtual work. Then the authors give the derivation of nonlinear equations of motion for the traveling unit by using Lagrangian approach. After that the uniqueness of the system fixed point is established and its stability is analyzed. An approximate analytical criterion determining the unstable domain is formulated, and the self-excited solutions of the nonlinear system is given by using the harmonic balance method. The authors verify the accuracy and stability of coexisting limit cycles by Floquet analysis. Finally, they perturb the dynamical system with weak periodic excitation of the machining dynamic load in order to obtain periodic and aperiodic responses.
