H. Berens and G. G. Lorentz proved in 1972 an inverse theorem for Bernstein operators, thus characterizing the smoothness condition \(\omega_2(f,t) = O(t^{\alpha})\) in terms of degree of approximation by Bernstein operators for \(0< \alpha < 2\). An analogous result was proved for \(0 < \alpha < 1\) by D. X. Zhou for the Szász-Durrmeyer operators. We cannot hope an extension of this result for \(1 \leq \alpha < 2\). Several authors have modified the Szász-Durrmeyer operators such that an analogous result holds for all \(\alpha\) and/or for \(L_p\) approximation. The author introduces here a modification of the Szász-Durrmeyer operators by means of a three-diagonal generalized matrix and proves a Berens-Lorentz type result. Direct and converse theorems for these operators in \(L_p\) with the Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness are also obtained.
