The exact model matching problem for 2-D systems is considered. Explicit characterizations are emphasized for the class of models that can be matched (in the SISO case). It is shown that given the transfer functions \(T,T_m\in \mathbb{R}(s,z)\) of the system and of the model respectively, \(T= ND^{-1}\), \(T_m= N_m D_m^{-1}\), \(N,D,N_m,D_m\in \mathbb{R}[s,z]\), there exists a proper rational fraction \(C\in \mathbb{R}(s,z)\) such that \(TC=T_m\) if and only if the following conditions hold: i) \(\text{deg}_s D-\text{deg}_s N\leq \text{deg}_s D_m- \text{deg}_s N_m\), ii) \(\text{deg}_z D-\text{deg}_z N\leq\text{deg}_z D_m- \text{deg}_z N_m\), iii) the nonprincipal part of \(N\) divides the nonprincipal part of \(N_m\) (a polynomial \(P\in \mathbb{R}[s,z]\) with \(\text{deg}_s P=n\), \(\text{deg}_z P=q\) has a principal term if \(p_{nq}\neq 0\) where \(p_{nq}\) is the coefficient of \(s^nz^q\); any polynomial \(P\in \mathbb{R}[s,z]\) can be uniquely decomposed up to a non-zero constant as \(P= \widetilde{P}P_p\), where \(P_p\) has a principal term while no nontrivial term of \(\widetilde{P}\) has a principal term; \(\widetilde{P}\) is said to be the nonprincipal part of \(P\)). Therefore, condition iii) is \(\widetilde{N}\mid \widetilde{N}_m\). In a similar way, necessary and sufficient structural conditions for the 2-D exact model matching with stability are given.
