The authors propose a unified numerical method for analysis of both compressible and incompressible viscous flows. It is important to note that they use the energy equation expressed in terms of pressure, and the governing equations are in non-conservative form. The temporal discretization is based on the finite difference method. The main feature is that the procedure for advancing flow field variables in time consists of two phases, namely an advection phase and a non-advection phase. The non-advection phase is performed first by using a Galerkin finite element method. This phase produces the intermediate values of the variables which are corrected by solving the advection equations. To discretize the advection equations, the authors use finite element method (for momentum equation) and finite volume method (for continuity and energy equations). To validate the method, they solve four benchmark problems and compare the results with other numerical results, analytical solutions and available experimental data.
