A second-order finite difference scheme for the solution of the Euler equations is presented. The scheme is based on nondirectionally split single-step Eulerian formulations of the Godunov approach. The authors propose a new method for constructing effective left and right states of Riemann problems arising from interfaces of one-, two-, and three-dimensional numerical grids. The scheme is tested in numerical examples involving strong shocks. The analysis reveals that the scheme is robust and generates thin shock fronts, but may be less accurate compared to a fully multidimensional Riemann solver, since wave interactions are not fully taken into account.
