Let \(E\) be a torus or a segment of \textit{R. Shapiro} (Smoothing and approximation of functions (1969; Zbl 0194.09101) set up a problem of comparative pointwise behaviour of two sequences of linear operators on \(C(E)\), the space of continuous functions on \(E\). This question was studied in many works [\textit{R. Getsadze}, J. Approximation Theory 80, No. 3, 409-422 (1995; Zbl 0873.42003); \textit{W. Dickmeis}, {R. J. Nessel} and \textit{E. van Wickeren}, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 18, 606-608 (1986; Zbl 0602.42004); \textit{N. Kirchoff} and \textit{R. J. Nessel}, Acta Math. Hung. 62, No. 1-2, 97-110 (1993; Zbl 0798.41014)]. Thus, it was shown that for different sequences of linear operators \(\{A_n\}\) and \(\{B_n\}\) the relationship \(| Bu(f)- f| =O(| A_n(f) -f|)\) may fail almost everywhere. In the present paper the author proves that this occurs for quite general sequences of operators on \(C(E)\).
