The author considers large classes of Schrödinger operators \(H=-\Delta +V(x)\) in \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\), and a ``comparison operator'' \(H_0= -\Delta +V_0(x)\). \(V(x)\) coincides with \(V_0(x)\) on a sequence of ring shaped regions \(U_n\), \(n=1,2, \dots\). Under certain conditions for ``quantum mechanically effective'' barriers \(\{x;V(x) =V_0(x)\}\), he investigates the spectrum \(\sigma (H(\lambda))\) of \(H(\lambda)= H+\lambda W\), where the function \(W:\mathbb{R}^d \to\mathbb{R}\) is continuous, compactly supported, and of fixed sign. That is, he proves (i) \(\sigma_{ac} (H(\lambda)) \cap \rho(H_0)= \varphi\) for every \(\lambda \in\mathbb{R}\), and (ii) \(\sigma_c (H(\lambda)) \cap\rho (H_0)= \varphi\) for almost every \(\lambda\in\mathbb{R}\), and he exhibits intervals of dense pure point spectrum of \(H(\lambda)\), in any dimension \(d\). Here \(\rho(H_0)= \mathbb{C} \setminus \sigma(H_0)\), and \(\sigma_{ac} (H(\lambda))\) is the absolute continuous spectrum of \(H(\lambda)\). He also gives an explicit decay estimate for eigenfunctions, establishing localization for \(H(\lambda)\) in arbitrary spectral gaps of \(H_0\).
