This book concerns large-time asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the initial-value problem for the linear dispersive equation \[ u_t+ iR(D)u =0,\;u(x,0) =u_0(x), \] where the dispersive function \(R\) is homogeneous of degree \(>1\). No comprehensive account exists in the literature on the asymptotic properties of the solutions of constant coefficient linear dispersive equations. The aim of this book is to provide a reference work for researcher and applied scientists interested in the asymptotic expansions of these solutions. The solution of this initial value problem can be expressed as a Fourier integral with the consequence that the asymptotic properties depend on the large-time behaviour of a particular integral \(I(x,t)\) for \(t\to\infty\) at fixed \(b=xt^{-1}\). In the first chapter are discussed the outer asymptotic expansions together with their accuracy by using the classical method of Laplace contour integrals as made for instance by \textit{F. W. J. Olver} [Asymptotics and Special Functions (Academic Press, New York, 1974; Zbl 0303.41035)]. Unfortunately these approximations break down, if \(b\) tends to zero too rapidly, when \(t\) tends to infinity. This failure is overcome by the inner asymptotic approximations discussed in Chapter two. Chapter three is concerned with uniformly valid expansions, and Chapter four makes a return to the original subject of the solutions of the linear dispersive equation, when the dispersive function \(R\) is of degree 2 or 3. Chapter four is devoted to applications mainly for equations possessing real-valued solutions such as linearized Benjamin-Ono and linearized KdV equation. Fifty-eight references and a detailed subject index complete the book.
