This notes announces the following Theorem: Let \(S\) be a periodic semigroup. Then \(RS\) possesses an identity if and only if \(R\langle E(S)\rangle\) possesses an identity, and there exists a finite subset \(U\) of \(E(S)\) such that \(S=SU=US\). Moreover, in this case, \(I_{RS}=I_{R\langle E(S)\rangle}\).
