The paper under review deals with some less known aspects in the history of the calculus of variations, in particular with Beltrami's and Hilbert's approaches to field theory. The author uses Adolf Kneser's notion of transversality to compare the two approaches. The paper ends with describing Carathéodory's method to field theory. The article is based to a large extent on archival documents.
