The authors present an exact axisymmetric three-dimensional solution for a simply supported, finite piezoelectric cylindrical shell subjected to axisymmetric thermoelectric load. The shell is electrically grounded and maintained at the stress-free reference temperature. Fourier series are used, and the solution is constructed as a product of an exponential function and a power series in the thickness coordinate. The results illustrate the predominant effect of the radius-to-thickness ratio on the through-the-thickness variations of displacements, stresses, electric potential and electric displacement. The loading profile also influences the distributions of various entities. Additionally, the authors consider an inverse problem of finding the applied temperature from the measured potential difference between the lateral surfaces of the shell.
