The author considers the propagation of acoustic waves in anisotropic elastic medium. The medium is supposed to be a prestressed polycrystalline aggregate with precisely defined texture-induced and stress-induced anisotropies of the aggregate. The main objective is to study the influence of stress-induced and texture-induced factors on the birefringence of acoustic waves, and to evaluate the possibility of separation of these factors. The article contains a rather meaty review of investigations in this field. For solving the problem, the authors suggested a micromechanical model of prestressed polycrystalline aggregate with hyperelastic properties. It follows from this model that, generally, the separation of stress-induced and texture-induced birefringences is impossible. However, it is shown that the mentioned separation can be achieved approximately if the texture is sufficiently weak. Some examples for orthotropic materials are considered, and the fulfillment of the last property is shown.
