This work is concerned with the construction of structured grids for complicated geometries which have their application in the context of finite difference methods. When using overlapping composite meshes, the subregions can be discretized by means of structured grids, and each of them may be changed independently. For this, additional boundary conditions for the subregion boundaries have to be determined via interpolating values from the interior of an overlapping neighbouring mesh. The authors consider the influence of such an interpolation on the stability of the numerical solution. The Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional wave equation serves as the model for which the analysis is carried out. Finally, effects of a fourth-order dissipation on the equation modeling viscoelastic fluid flow are studied.
