The Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional equations of barotropic viscous gas flows is considered under the assumption that pressure, as a function of specific volume, satisfies the inequalities \(p''(v)\lessgtr0\) for \(v\gtrless v_\ast\in (v_-,v_+)\), where \(v_\pm\) and \(u_\pm\) are the limit values of the initial specific volume \(v_0\) and the initial velocity \(u_0\) as \(x\to\pm\infty\). The stability of travelling wave solutions \((V(x-st),U(x-st))\) is proved for the case when \(\int_R(v_0-V,u_0-U)dx=0,\) \(p'''<0\) for \(v\in[v_-,v_+]\) and the shock speed \(s\) satisfies the condition \(s[v]=-[u]\), \(s[u]=[p]\), \(-p'(v_+)=s^2<-p'(v_-)\), where \([v]\) stands for the jump, \([v]=v_+-v_-\). The results are applied to the van der Waals gas.
