The authors develop an isotropic damage formulation for the artery undergoing large deformations. A consistent internal variable theory of thermodynamics is employed, and the dissipation inequality involving the rate of damage parameter is established. Introducing a damage criterion identified as damage surface in the strain space, the authors study the change in the damage parameter. The authors introduce an effective Lagrangian strain tensor involving a weighting function and the damage response tensor. They provide specific forms for the weighting and response functions. The model is illustrated by an example of a bovine coronary artery which can readily be incorporated in computational codes.
