The authors compare the performance of three numerical algorithms (the numerical differentiation method due to \textit{R. W. Klopfenstein} [RCA Rev. 32, 447-510 (1971)], the second-order backward differentiation method, and the implicit-explicit multistep method) applied to the solution of large systems of ordinary differential equations (up to several tens of equations), arising from atmospheric dispersion problems by taking into account chemical reactions. The conclusion is that the method due to Klopfenstein, especially when combined with an appropriate Jacobi factorization and Gauss-Seidel iterations, can provide an efficient solution of the title problem.
