The book presents an excellent introduction to the spectral theory of singular integral operators (SIOs) with piecewise continuous coefficients on a Carleson curve \(\Gamma\) in the Lebesgue space \(L_p(\Gamma,w)\) with a Muckenhoupt weight \(w(t)\). Due to complexity of curves and weights (most general where SIO is still bounded in \(L_p(\Gamma,w))\) the spectra are extremely rich and impressive (cf. pictures in the book). Spectra of the Cauchy singular integral operator \(S_\Gamma\) in \(L_p(\Gamma,w),\) wherein \(w(t)\) is an exponential weight \(\prod_k|t-t_j|^{\alpha_j}\) and \(\Gamma\) is piecewise smooth, consist of two circular arcs connecting points \(\pm 1\) in the complex plane (H. Widom, I. Gohherg, N. Krupnik). These arcs metamorphose into logarithmic double spirals for complicated curves and might blow up further into massive spectral sets which have logarithmic double spirals as boundary. Most interesting seems to be the existence of instability points: for certain values of weight parameters their interference with non-piecewise-smooth Carleson curves results into sudden disappearance of logarithmic spirals and emergence of so called leaves. To observe the full picture of above mentioned metamorphosis of the spectra of singular integral operators the language of Toeplitz operators is applied which is convenient and closely related. Other technical tools playing a dominant role in the book are the local principle, \(N\)-projections and geometric theory of functions. The book contains almost 400 pages, 213 references and 48 illustrations. The table of content provides an overall view of topics and results elucidated in the book. Contents: Preface, 1.
