This paper constructs two examples of quasiregular maps \({\mathbb{S}}^3\to{\mathbb{S}}^3\), from the 3-sphere to itself, that branch on a wild Cantor set. The construction of the the first map was motivated by work of Semmes [\textit{G. David} and \textit{S. Semmes}, in `Analysis and partial differential equations', Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math.122, 101-111 (1990; Zbl 0752.46014)] who put a metric \(d\) on \({\mathbb{S}}^3\) so that no homeormorphism from \(({\mathbb{S}}^3,d)\) to the standard \({\mathbb{S}}^3\) is Lipschitz. However, the authors show that there is a branched cover \(({\mathbb{S}}^3,d)\to{\mathbb{S}}^3\) that is a natural, finite-to-one analog of a bi-Lipschitz map. The construction of the second map unwinds a discrete, smooth and uniformly quasiconformal group action of \textit{M. H. Freedman} and \textit{R. Skora} [J. Differ. Geom. 25, 75-89 (1987; Zbl 0588.57024)]. Freedman and Skora constructed a quasiconformal action \(\psi\) on \({\mathbb{S}}^3\) that is not conjugate to a conformal action by any homeomorphism of \({\mathbb{S}}^3\). The authors show that \(\psi\) is nevertheless quasiregularly semiconjugate to a conformal action.
