A new model for the hydrogen atom based on classical electrodynamics (i.e., based on the free Maxwell equations) is presented, where Sommerfeld's formula for the fine structure of the hydrogen atom is obtained. These results are possible due to the equivalence of the free Maxwell and Dirac equations which are valid for solutions of the free Maxwell equations with nonzero field invariants.
