An exact formula for the number \(S_n(1342)\) of 1342-avoiding permutations of length \(n\) is given by proving that the ordinary generating function \(H(x)\) for these numbers is \(H(x)= 32x/(-8x^2+ 20x+ 1-\sqrt{(1- 8x)^3})\).
