The authors consider the Ishimori system that may be written in the form \[ \begin{aligned} i u_t + u_{xx} + c_0 u_{yy}&= 2 {\bar u \over 1+ |u|^2} \big ( u_{xx}^2 + c_0 u_{yy}^2 \big) + i c_1 \big ( u_x \phi_y + u_y \phi_x \big) ,\\ \phi_{xx} + c_2 \phi_{yy} &= 2ic_3 {u_x {\bar u}_y - {\bar u}_x u_y \over (1+|u|^2)^2} \end{aligned} \] complemented by an initial condition for the function \(u\). The system is classified as elliptic-elliptic, elliptic-hyperbolic, hyperbolic-elliptic or hyperbolic-hyperbolic according to the signs of \(c_0,c_4\). Global existence of small solutions as well as their asymptotic rate of decay for large time is proved. The interesting feature of the paper is that no exponential spatial decay of the data is assumed.
