      The paper was motivated by a statement contained in \textit{P. Y. Lee} and \textit{T. S. Chew} [Real Anal. Exch. 11, 221-227 (1986; Zbl 0604.26007)]. In particular, the author shows that if a function \(F:[a,b]\to \mathbb R\) and subsets \(E_i\) \((i=1,2,\dots ,n)\) of \([a,b]\) are given such that \(F\in VB^*\) on each \(E_i \cup \{a,b\}\), then \(F\in VB^*\) on \(\bigcup _{i=1}^n E_i\cup \{a,b\}\), as well. Moreover, if, in addition, \(E_i\) are closed, \(F\) is continuous on \([a,b]\) and \(F\in AC^*\) on each \(E_i\), \(F_n(x)=F(x)\) for \(x\in \bigcup _{i=1}^n E_i\cup \{a,b\}\) and \(F_n\) is linear on the closure of each interval contiguous to \(\bigcup _{i=1}^n E_i\cup \{a,b\}\), then \(F_n\) is differentiable a.e. on \([a,b]\) and \(F_n'\) is integrable on \([a,b]\). [For the definitions of the classes \(BV^*\) and \(AC^*\), see, e.g., \textit{V. Ene}: ``Real functions -- current topics'' (1995; Zbl 0866.26002)].
