A group is said to have finite abelian section rank if it lacks infinite abelian sections of prime exponent. In a previous article [Geom. Dedicata 38, 331-341 (1991; Zbl 0722.20025)] the authors proved that a soluble-by-finite group \(G\) with finite abelian section rank which satisfies \(G=AB=AC=BC\), where the subgroups \(A\) and \(B\) are nilpotent and \(C\) is locally supersoluble, is supersoluble too. That result is an extension of the case of a finite group studied by Kegel. There exist examples showing that it is not enough to assume only supersolubility of all three subgroups \(A\), \(B\), and \(C\) or even two of them. However, the situation is better if the commutator subgroup \(G'\) of \(G\) is locally nilpotent. The main result of the present article is as follows: Let the group \(G=AB=AC=BC\) be the product of three locally supersoluble (locally nilpotent) groups. If \(G\) has finite abelian section rank and the commutator subgroup \(G'\) of \(G\) is locally nilpotent, then \(G\) is locally supersoluble (locally nilpotent). Notice that the idea of such a condition on the commutator subgroup is due to Baer. Actually, he proved that, if \(G\) is a finite group with nilpotent commutator subgroup and \(H\) and \(K\) are supersoluble normal subgroups of \(G\), then the product \(HK\) is supersoluble (see \textit{R. Baer} [Ill. J. Math. 1, 115-187 (1957; Zbl 0077.03003)]). In the last part of the article, the authors consider the following question: When do groups with a nilpotent-by-finite triple factorization have nilpotent (locally nilpotent) commutator subgroups?
