An elementary non-Fourier analytic proof of the fact that half spaces determine probability measures in \(\mathbb{R}^d\) (the Cramér-Wold device) is provided. If \(f:\mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}\) is bounded, measurable, nonnegative and with strictly positive and finite integral, then the functions \(\{f((a-\cdot)/b): a\in \mathbb{R}^d, b>0\}\) determine measures, as is known. A fact that does not require Fourier analysis for its proof, and the main part of the proof of Cramér and Wold then consists in finding the right \(f\). It was not known whether a non-Fourier analytic proof of this theorem was possible.
