A resolution of a space consists of an inverse system \((X_a, p_{ab},A)- X_a\) being completely regular and \(A\) being directed -- and of maps \(p_a: X\to X_a\) connected with bonding maps \(p_{ab}\) by some special commutativity conditions involving the normal covers (for the notion the reader is referred to the paper of \textit{S. Mardešić} and \textit{T. Watanabe} [Glas. Mat., III. Ser. 24(44), No. 4, 587-637 (1989; Zbl 0715.54009)]) of the spaces \(X_a\), and they fulfill -- together with \(p_{ab}\) -- some requirements with respect to maps into polyhedra. The space \(X\) coincides with the inverse limit of the resolution if it is paracompact. \textit{T. Watanabe} [Tsukuba J. Math. 11, 17-59 (1987; Zbl 0646.55006)] enriched the structure of the resolution assuming that on each \(X_a\) a normal cover \(U_a\) -- called a mesh at \(a\) -- is distinguished by means of which the commutativity conditions connecting \(p_a\) and \(p_{ab}\) are strengthened. Watanabe proved that the maps between spaces can be represented by maps between their resolution if they are enriched by meshes and the resolution of the range space is polyhedral. The authors show that this additional mesh structure is necessary for the validity of the theorem.
