The paper contains a numerical solution of a generalised Reynolds equation for power-law lubricant and three-dimensional elasticity equations corresponding to the three-dimensional bearing geometry. An iterative scheme, called the weighted average method, has been used to deal with the three-dimensional elastohydrodynamic lubrication equations. The scheme leads to faster convergence at high eccentricity ratios. Details of the numerical procedure, which is based on the approach by \textit{Cen Shaoqi, Chen Han} and \textit{Tang Zhaomin} [J. Xi'an Jiaotong Univ. 16, No. 2, 119-126 (Chinese) (1982; Zbl 0488.76047)], are given and various interesting observations are made about the influence of flow behaviour and bearing materials on the performance parameters of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, such as pressure distributions, load capacities and attitude angles, for heavily loaded finite journal bearings.
