A submanifold \(M\) of a Riemannian manifold is called pseudo-umbilical if its shape operator in the direction of the mean curvature vector is proportional to the identity map. The author derives an integral formula for compact pseudo-umbilical submanifolds in a real space form, involving the mean curvature function, the squared length of the second fundamental form, and the Laplacian of the mean curvature function. He then applies the integral formula to obtain a sufficient condition for a pseudo-umbilical submanifold in a real space form to have parallel second fundamental form.
