    Let \(D\) be an integral domain with quotient field \(K\). Let \(F(D)\) be the set of non-zero \(D\)-submodules of \(K\) and \(F'(D)\) the set of non-zero fractional ideals of \(D\) (i.e., the members \(A\) of \(F(D)\) for which there exists a nonzero \(d\in D\) with \(dA \subset D)\). A star-operation on \(D\) is a mapping \(A\to A^*\) on \(F'(D)\) that satisfies the following conditions for \(0\neq a\in K\) and \(A,B\in F'(D)\): (1) \((a)^*= (a)\); (2) \((aA)^*= aA^*\); (3) \(A\subseteq A^*\) and if \(A\subseteq B\), then \(A^* \subseteq B^*\); and (4) \((A^*)^*= A^*\) while a semistar-operation on \(D\) is a mapping \(A\to A^*\) on \(F(D)\) that satisfies conditions (2)--(4) for \(A,B\in F(D)\). It is shown that many of the results concerning star-opertions and the Kronecker function ring given in section 32 of \textit{R. Gilmer}'s book ``Multiplicative ideal theory'' [Queen's Pap. Pure Appl. Math. Vol. 90 (1992; Zbl 0804.13001)] can be generalized to semistar-operations. Semistar-operations on Marot rings satisfying property \((1)\) are briefly considered.
