    The following higher-order abstract Cauchy problem \[ \begin{cases} u^{(n)}(t)+ \sum^{n- 1}_{i=0} A_iu^{(i)}(t)= 0,\quad t\geq 0,\\ u^{(k)}(0)= u_k,\quad 0\leq k\leq n-1,\end{cases}\tag{1} \] is considered, where \(A_0,A_1,\dots, A_{n- 1}\) are closed linear operators on a Banach space \(E\). The aim of the authors is to study how we could give estimates as good as possible on the set of initial data, for which solutions exist. There are obtained some new results of existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of solutions of initial data. This paper is based on the articles of \textit{F. Neubrander} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, 257-290 (1986; Zbl 0589.34004)] and \textit{R. de Laubenfels} [Semigroup Forum 41, No. 1, 83-95 (1990; Zbl 0717.47014)]. The main result states that if \(n\geq 2\), \(B=- A_{n-1}\) generates an \(r\)-times integrated semigroup and for \(0\leq i\leq n-2\), \(D(A_i)\supset D(B)\) and \(A_iD(B)\subset D(B^{i- n+r+2})\) \((i\geq n-r- 1)\), then (1) has a unique solution \(u(\cdot)\) for \[ u_{n- 1}\in D(B^{r+ 1}),\quad u_k\in\bigcap^k_{i=0} y_k(i)\quad (0\leq k\leq n-2) \] and there exists \(C\), \(w>0\) (if \(u_k\in D(B)\)) such that \[ \begin{aligned}\| u(t)\|+\| Bu(t)\|\leq Ce^{wt} & \Biggl[\sum^{\ell_0}_{\ell= 0}\| B^\ell u_{n- 1}\|+ \sum^{n- 2}_{k= 0} \sum^k_{i= 0} \sum^{\ell_{k_i}}_{\ell= 0}\| B^\ell A_iu_k\|+\\ & +\sum^{n- 2}_{k= 0}(\| u_k\|+ \| Bu_k\|)\Biggr]\quad (t\geq 0),\end{aligned} \] where \[ y_k(i)= \begin{cases} D(A_i) & \text{if}\quad i\leq k-r\\ D(B^{i+ r-k}A_i) & \text{if}\quad i\geq k-r+1\end{cases}\qquad\ell_0= \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if}\quad r\leq n-2\\ r- n+2 & \text{if}\quad r\geq n-1\end{cases} \] \[ \ell_{k_i}= \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if} \quad r\leq k- i+ n-1\\ i- k+r- n+1 & \text{if} \quad r\geq k-i+n\end{cases}\qquad(0\leq i\leq k,\;0\leq k\leq n-2). \] An immediate consequence is deduced from this result when \(B\) generates a strongly continuous semigroup. It can be remarked that, compared with the de Laubenfels' result, the above-mentioned result provides a larger set of initial data for which there exists a solution and also a better estimation for the continuous dependence of initial data. The authors prove a similar result for the case \(n\geq 3\).
