Soft \(C^*\)-algebras were first introduced by \textit{B. Blackadar} [Math. Scand. 56, 249-275 (1985; Zbl 0615.46066)]. In particular, let \(G\) be a group given in terms of generators and relations by \[ G=\langle u_i,\;i=1,\ldots ,n\mid r_j(u_1,\ldots,u_n)=1,\;j=1,\ldots ,s\rangle. \] Then the ``hard'' group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*(G)\) is defined to be the universal \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(n\) unitaries \(u_1,\ldots,u_n\) subject to the relations: \(r_j(u_1,\ldots,u_n)-1=0\), \(j=1,\ldots,s\). For \(0\leq \varepsilon\leq 2\) the \(\varepsilon\)-soft group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_\varepsilon (G)\) is defined to be the universal \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(n\) unitaries \(u_1,\ldots ,u_n\) subject to the relations: \(\| r_j(u_1,\ldots ,u_n)-1\| \leq \varepsilon\), \(j=1,\ldots ,s\). The author investigates in this paper various soft \(C^*\)-algebras, and in details ones associated to \(\mathbb{Z}^n\). In particular, a characterization of so-called soft-commutative tori is obtained (in the simplest situation an example of last ones is the universal \(C^*\)- algebra generated by two unitaries \(u_0, u_1\) subject to the softened commutativity relation: \(\| u_0u_1-u_1u_0\| \leq \varepsilon\)). Two generalizations of the notion of soft \(C^*\)-algebra are considered in this paper. The first one is the parametrized form \(C^*_{\varepsilon,\theta}(G)\), \(\theta=\{\rho_j\}_{j=1,\ldots,s}\), \(\rho_j\in\mathbb{T}\), of soft group \(C^*\)-algebras defined to be the universal \(C^*\)-algebras generated by unitaries \(u_1,\ldots,u_n\) subject to relations \(\| r_j(u_1,\ldots ,u_n)-\rho _j\| \leq \varepsilon ,\quad j=1,\ldots ,s \) (one can drop \(\theta\) when \(\theta ={\{1\} }_{1,\ldots ,s}\)). The second one is the notion of ``mixed'' \(C^*\)-algebra where only some of the relations defining the original group \(C^*\)-algebra are softened. The author determines the \(K\)-theory of considered soft \(C^*\)-algebras for large classes of examples.
