Given an odd prime \(P\) let \(p_n\) (resp. \(q_n\)) denote the \(n\)-th prime \(\neq P\) which is a quadratic residue \((\text{mod }P)\) (a quadratic nonresidue \((\text{mod }P)\) resp.). The main result of the paper states that if the Dirichlet \(L\)-function associated with \(\chi(n)= (\frac nP)\) (the Legendre symbol) has no real zeros inside \((1/2,1)\) then the difference \(d_n= p_n- q_n\) changes sign infinitely many times as \(n\to\infty\). Reviewer's remark: The above theorem is a corollary to a general result by \textit{J. Kaczorowski} and \textit{J. Pintz} [Acta Math. Hung. 48, 173-185 (1986; Zbl 0613.10036), cf. also Acta Math. Hung. 49, No. 3-4, 441-453 (1987; Zbl 0631.10026)] and an extended version of the classical theorem of \textit{J. E. Littlewood} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 158, 1869-1972 (1914; JFM 45.0305.01)].
