The author applies the general boundary element method (BEM) to solve 2D unsteady nonlinear heat transfer problems of inhomogeneous materials governed by the hyperbolic heat conduction equation (HHCE): \[ {1\over c^2} {\partial^2T \over \partial F^2}+ {1\over \alpha} {\partial T\over \partial F} ={\partial \over \partial \overline x} \left[ \overline k_1,(T) {\partial T\over \partial\overline x} \right]+{\partial\over \partial \overline y} \left[\overline k_2(T) {\partial T\over \partial \overline y} \right] +\overline s(\overline x, \overline y, \overline t). \] Traditional BEM can be applied to such problems if the nonlinear operator can be split up into linear and nonlinear parts and a fundamental solution of the linear part can be found. In case there is no linear part of the operator, the traditional BEM is invalid. In case \(\overline k_1 (T)= \overline k_2(T)\), the equation under investigation can be solved by traditional BEM. However in case \(\overline k_1 (T)\neq \overline k_2(T)\), the traditional BEM is invalid. Herein it is shown that general BEM proposed by \textit{S. J. Liao} [Boundary Elem. 17, 67-74 (1995; Zbl 0839.65132)] is still valid to solve HHCE even in case \(\overline k_1(T)\neq\overline k_2(T)\).
