Adaptive control is fully and comprehensively described, extending from nonadaptive basic control theory to applications. Only discrete time systems are dealt with in this book, but this is adequate because a digital computer is employed as a prime part of a control device in almost all cases. Both deterministic and stochastic processes are evenly dealt with, and rather much space is devoted to the study of robust adaptive control. As for basic theory, nonadaptive control theory is fully explained, and furthermore, examples and applications are abundantly illustrated. Following chapter 1, where an understandable view of adaptive control is presented, system models of deterministic as well as stochastic processes are explained in chapter 2. Parameter adaptation algorithms both in a deterministic and a stochastic environment are explained in chapter 3 and 4 respectively. Identification is carefully divided into open loop (chapter 5) and closed loop (chapter 9) identification. Chapter 6 is concerned with adaptive identification. Chapter 7 (digital control strategies) and 8 (robust digital control design) together with chapter 2 constitute the explanation of basic nonadaptive control theory. Robust parameter estimation is described in chapter 10. Both direct (chapter 11) and indirect (chapter 12) adaptive control are described on the basis of the theory developed in chapter 10. Some practical aspects and applications are illustrated in chapter 13. A perspective view and further subjects are addressed in chapter 14.
