Let \(F_n\) be the free group of rank \(n\) and \(\Aut F_n\) be its full automorphism group. Passing to the quotient \(F_n/F_n'\) by the commutator subgroup \(F_n'\), one obtains a canonical homomorphism: \(f\colon\Aut F_n\to\Aut (F_n/F_n')\cong\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})\), which can be regarded as an \(n\)-dimensional complex representation of \(\Aut F_n\). The author proves that any representation \(g\colon\Aut F_n\to\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})\) factors through \(f\). Also it is proved that \(\Aut F_n\) has finite representation type with respect to the class of representations \(\colon\Aut F_n\to\text{GL}_d(\mathbb{C})\) such that the image \(g(\ker f)\) is a nilpotent group of bounded nilpotency class.
