Let \(M=G/H\) be a semisimple symmetric space relative to an involution \(\sigma\) of \(G\). A causal structure on \(M\) is a field of regular cones \(x\mapsto C_x \subset T_xM\), and if \(M\) has a \(G\)-invariant causal structure, \(M\) is called causal. The space \(M\) is said to be ordered if it is causal and there is no nontrivial closed causal curve. The \(c\)-function plays an important role in the harmonic analysis on semisimple symmetric spaces. The \(c\)-function for an ordered symmetric space \(M\) has been studied for \(M\) of rank 1 and for \(M=G/H\) with \(G\) complex by \textit{J. Faraut}, \textit{J. Hilgert} and \textit{G. Olafsson} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 44, 927-965 (1994; Zbl 0810.43003)], and for the symmetric spaces of Cayley type by \textit{J. Faraut} [Contemporary Math. 191, 41-55 (1995; Zbl 0847.53039)]. In this paper, using some algebraic identities of determinants, the author gets an explicit formula for the \(c\)-function on the ordered symmetric spaces \(SL(n, \mathbb{R})/SO(p,q)\). The formula agrees with a formula conjectured by Faraut in the general case.
