Let \(M^k_n\) resp. \(S^k_n\) denote the space of Siegel modular forms resp. cusp forms of weight \(k\) and degree \(n\). The authors' main result says \[ \begin{aligned} S^k_n= \{0\} \quad & \text{for }k \leq 6, \;n\geq 1\text{ and } (k,n)=(7,4), (7,6), (8,8), \\ M^k_n= \{0\} \quad & \text{for } k=3,5,n\geq 1\text{ and } k=6,\;n\geq 9, \\ \dim M^k_n=1 \quad & \text{for } k=4,\;n\geq 1\text{ and } k=6,\;n\leq 8. \end{aligned} \] The basic new idea of the proof is to consider the standard \(L\)-function of a simultaneous Hecke eigenform. Analytic properties of the \(L\)-function and the explicit formula show that such an \(L\)-function cannot exist for certain small weights.
