For a natural number \(k\geq 1\) let \(G\) be a (sharply) \(k\)-transitive subset of the symmetric group \(\text{Sym}(E)\) of a set \(E\) of arbitrary cardinality, \(E^*=E\cup\{\infty\}\) where \(\infty\not\in E\). A subset \(G^*\subset\text{Sym}(E^*)\) is called an extension of \(G\) iff \(G^*_\infty=G\neq G^*\). In the present paper the authors investigate necessary and sufficient conditions for an extension \(G^*\) of \(G\) to be (sharply) \((k+1)\)-transitive. As a special question the case that \(G\) is a group and \(G^*\) be a group is considered. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions for a sharply \(k\)-transitive permutation set (\(k\geq 3\)) to be a group are established.
