The boundary blow-up problem \[ \Delta u=f(u)\quad \text{ in}\quad \Omega,\qquad u(x)\to \infty\quad \text{ as}\quad x\to \partial \Omega \] and its non-autonomous version are considered in a bounded and convex \(C^{2}\)-domain \(\Omega\subset {\mathbb{R}}^{N}\). Growth conditions on \(f(u)\) as \(u\to \pm\infty\) are given which imply the existence of two distinct blow-up solutions. In the case when \(f(u)\) has a zero, the authors prove the existence of a positive and sign-changing blow-up solution. Further on, if \(\min f>0\), a bifurcation parameter \(\lambda\) is introduced into the equation \(\Delta u=\lambda f(u)\). Then, there exists a \(\lambda_{\text{crit}}\) such that if \(0<\lambda<\lambda_{\text{crit}}\) there are blow-up solutions, while for \(\lambda>\lambda_{\text{crit}}\) there is no blow-up solution.
